Mounds Candy Bar History

Mounds is a popular candy bar known for its combination of rich dark chocolate and sweet coconut filling. Let's explore the history behind this delectable treat.

The Mounds candy bar was first introduced in 1920 by the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company, which was founded by Peter Paul Halajian and his sons, Armen and Megrab. The candy bar was initially created as a response to the success of the Almond Joy candy bar, which featured milk chocolate, almonds, and a coconut filling.

The Mounds candy bar, however, was specifically designed to cater to those who preferred a pure coconut experience without the addition of almonds. It featured a smooth and creamy coconut center enrobed in a dark chocolate coating.

The name "Mounds" was chosen to reflect the bar's distinctive shape, resembling a mound or a small hill. The candy quickly gained popularity for its unique combination of flavors and textures, appealing to coconut and chocolate lovers alike.

Over the years, Mounds has become an iconic candy bar in the United States. Its simple yet indulgent composition and the high-quality ingredients used in its production have contributed to its enduring popularity.

In 1978, the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company was acquired by Cadbury Schweppes, a multinational confectionery company. Today, Mounds is manufactured and distributed by The Hershey Company, which acquired the U.S. operations of Cadbury Schweppes in 1988.

Mounds candy bars are widely enjoyed as a standalone treat, but they are also a popular choice for baking and desserts. The combination of rich dark chocolate and sweet coconut lends itself well to a variety of recipes, including cakes, cookies, and pies.

Mounds bars have become ingrained in popular culture and have been featured in various forms of media, including movies, TV shows, and advertisements. They continue to be a beloved choice for coconut lovers and those seeking a delightful chocolate-coconut experience.

Whether enjoyed as a snack or incorporated into desserts, Mounds candy bars offer a taste of tropical indulgence with their rich chocolate and sweet coconut filling. Their timeless appeal and consistent quality have made them a favorite treat for generations of candy enthusiasts.

Mounds Candy Bar Memories

I remember enjoying Mounds bars a lot when I was a kid in NYC during the 50's. On Saturday mornings it almost became a ritual to sit down in front of the Muntz television and watch Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion starring none other than Buster Crabbe, who also played Flash Gordon during the 1930's.

I also enjoyed picking up the latest Classics comic and biking down to Riverside Drive where I would find a shady tree and armed with a Pepsi and a Mounds bar or two, go on mental adventures while perusing the pages of some historical saga like Ivanhoe or Moby Dick. With my time running out, those are the quiet moments I long for and I can almost feel myself drifting... drifting..... drifting........ drift........... dr.. ~ Ted from West Virginia
